Report: Wes Welker Hired By NFL Team As A Coach

The San Francisco 49ers announced a batch of hirings to the coaching staff and the Health & Performance Staff Wednesday. Former NFL wide receiver Wes Welker is part of this group.

Wes Welker is hired for the position of wide receivers coach. Miles Austin will be the team’s offensive quality control coach.

The hirings of these wide receivers and the one of quarterbacks coach Shane Day were reported long before the official announcement took place. The team confirmed the hirings on Wednesday. The 49ers made announcement of the addition of several new coaches. They made some title changes and made new additions to the Health & Performance staff. Former Philadelphia Flyers director of sports science Ben Peterson is one of the new additions.

The 37-year-old Welker spend the past two seasons as offensive assistant for the Houston Texans. He was working with the wide receivers, and used the help and the knowledge of Texans receivers coach John Perry.

Welker entered the NFL in 2004. He was an undrafted rookie who signed a contract with the San Diego Chargers. He played one match before being put on waivers. The receiver joined the Miami Dolphins, and spent three seasons with the team before being sent to New England in 2007.

Wes Welker was brilliant in New England

Wes Welker has his best game in New England. He managed to catch over 110 passes and 1,100 yards on five different occasions. He reached the Pro Bowl in five seasons, and 2011 was his best. Welker had 122 catches, 1,569 yards and nine touchdowns. The receiver left the team in 2013 to sign with the Denver Broncos. Wes played two seasons in Denver and one with the St. Louis Rams in 2015. In his 12 seasons in the league he totaled 903 catches for 9,924 yards and 50 touchdowns.
