Patriots Head Coach Jerod Mayo Makes Big Training Camp Change From Bill Belichick Era

Jerod Mayo respects Bill Belichick’s legacy and praised his accomplishment over the years. However, Mayo announced a great number of changes and promised to take a different approach. He has already made some major changes and reshaped the entire roster. Mayo is also changing some details related to Patriots training camp.

Mike Reiss from ESPN reported that Mayo has changed the training camp schedule. Practices are moved back by 90 minutes and players will now hit the field at 11 a.m. ET. This gives the team enough time to organize meetings before practice. Yes, players will also get to play in higher temperatures and work on their conditioning. Great tactic, right?

“One example of how Mayo is putting his own stamp on the Patriots is what time they plan to practice in training camp — 11 a.m. ET. Under Belichick in his final stretch of seasons, the team practiced at 9:30 a.m. Perhaps now there is a little more time for meetings before practice, and temperatures will rise a bit and test the team’s conditioning.”

Patriots to start off training camp under a new head coach, players trust Mayo

Mayo may be doing things differently, but it looks like Patriots players like his approach. He relies on “young bulls” and actually challenged Patriots veterans. The new-look Patriots team seems to be heading in the right direction. That’s what former Patriots quarterback Brian Hoyer said. He knows Mayo well and trusts his decisions.

“I played with Jerod. I came in a year after he did and he was a leader already as a second-year player,” Hoyer said during a recent NFL Live appearance. “Jerod coming right after Bill [Belichick] — he learned from Bill, but he’s also bridging that gap to the youth. He has his own flavor and personality. Talking to some of the guys [with the team now], they love the way he’s approaching it. You just have to carry that over to wins during the season.”
